Roma Manager Discusses Reason for Lack of Contract Negotiations

Roma manager Luciano Spalletti claims that he is doing a favour for the club by not signing a new contract.

The argument from the coach, who is in his second spell at the Italian outfit, says that beginning a contract discussion now will shift the focus away from the Italian Serie A title race. Roma are considered a second favourites for the league title this season after falling eight points behind Juventus. After three successive defeats in all competitions, the club returned to form with a 3-0 win over Palermo. They are now eight points behind the table leaders having played the same number of games.

Spalletti is out of contract in the summer and this has led to plenty of discussions over his future at the club. There is also a solution that Spalletti has tried to increase on the speculation by not beginning any contract talks with the club.

The 58-year-old feels the other way since he thinks that starting a contract talk at this stage will only shift the attention away from the target of catching Juventus, who are on course to lifting a sixth straight league title. Juventus have been in stupendous form of late after dropping only two points in the last nine league matches. As a result, Roma are seen as a rank outsiders for the title.

"If I lose another two games, I won't even end the season [at Roma] because they will kick me out.We lost four out of five games before Palermo and people keep talking about the contract?Things change quickly in football and, quite rightly, Roma are a strong club who need results, so they would be right to fire me. I think I did the club a favour by not signing a new contract and they are happy about it too!” said Spalletti.
